Why do so many refer to Elders as "window washers"?
by adjusted knowledge ini know the society is against higher education and the pursuit of careers but in my experience the elders in the various congregations i attended had good careers.
in fact most had their own businesses.
thinking back of the boe when i was a teenager this is what they had as a career: two were respected carpenters who owned a construction business, one a high school teacher(he was the po), one sold insurance and was a lawyer, one owned a landscaping business and also hired sisters to clean office buildings and other accounts he had, one was retired, and the last was a janitor for the school board.

There was a mix of professions with the elders I knew over the years. Some were window washers/janitors but also teachers, accountants and lawyers. I just thought those of the latter were hypocritical when they would tell you not to strive to get higher education and they themselves went to university.

STOP calling JW's a CULT--unless . . . they fit the checklist!
by Terry init is unkind, premature and even irresponsible to label people with whom we disagree using pejorative names.. for example, labeling a movement as a cult.. consider this example:.
sociologists d. bromley and a. shupe once described what they called the tnevnoc cult.
membership was open only to women, who were required to shave their heads, change their names, and wear specific clothing once they had entered the group.

I think all religions have some cult behaviour in them to more or lesser degrees. The points you have posted show that the JW's fit those criteria’s of being classified as being a cult.

Did I ever fear jehovah?
by Ignoranceisbliss inwhen i think back on when i started losing faith in the borg it all becomes kinda fuzzy.
even when i was 19, a pioneer an ms and the local golden boy i clearly remember lying about my field service time every month.
if i really feared jehovah there's no way i would of done that.

I was terrified. And the Watchtower was constantly telling me that I was making God angry by not doing enough, not doing it quality enough, or doing some small thing that was just putting me in line to be birdfood.
This is what turned me off was that anything I ever did was never good enough. I mean if there is a God he would know what is in my heart and it wouldn't matter what anyone thought.

Growing up as a JW I was made to fear Jehovah and it wasn't till I was old enough and left home that the doubts started. It is still hard and it takes time to really get that voice of conscience out of my brain. I no longer fear Jehovah but it did take time.

I was going to add that in the world a lot of these janitor and laborer elders now feel some self worth that someone would look up to them.

New "Caleb and Sofia" video on JW.ORG....you have to see it!
by stuckinarut2 inok, so i dont want to be a negative bitter person...and we all love little kids, but i am just so torn about the new video just uploaded on jw.org.
if you havent watched it yet, have a look at it...."an animated series that touches hearts".
(yes, its well done...and they certainly like to do a lot of boasting about their technical skills etc...).

But its the suggestive, leading and manipulative comments that make me get annoyed...The plug for GB...the leading way all kids must Love Jehovah etc...
This is nothing new they have been doing this as long as I can remember. Same old tired cult tactics.

It is something made up by religion to scare us to death and keep us in line.
